On Saturday, 26 September, ICOMOS (the International Council on Monuments and Sites), the international network of heritage professionals, organized a guided tour of Franchimont Castle in Theux for its members.
The restoration philosophy, stabilization techniques and construction challenges were presented by bureau greisch, following a historical introduction by the non-profit organization Compagnons de Franchimont. A site visit, attended by contractor Galère, concluded the day.
This medieval gem, partially listed as exceptional heritage, is completing the first phase of its one-year restoration programme, which focused on the consolidation of the keep’s masonry. The second phase will address public accessibility and the development of pedestrian pathways. Despite the high temperatures experienced this summer, which have limited the use of lime-based mortar, the project remains on schedule in preparation for the medieval fair to be held in 2027.
