Restoration and stabilisation of the Franchimont castle dungeon
The mission consists of two main stages.
The first concerns the restoration of the masonry and stabilisation of the dungeon and shield (classified as an exceptional heritage site in Wallonia), which date from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. Exposure to the elements and previous restoration work using cement mortar have seriously damaged the masonry. The most damaged rubblestone will therefore be replaced, and the wall heads will be covered with vegetation to limit water infiltration. In addition, injectable anchors will be used to stabilise the large tower, which has a significant tilting.
The second stage involves enhancing the site to make the history of the château easier and clearer to understand, while improving visitor access and safety. The work will be carried out while respecting the ancient remains: suggesting rather than restituting. To this end, reversible processes will be favoured, and new interventions will be clearly identifiable. A major challenge of the project will also be to take place within a timeframe dictated by medieval fairs and periods when lime was in use. Care will also have to be taken not to disturb the great horned owl, which took up residence at the castle a few years ago, and to keep the site accessible to visitors.
