Arquennes – new cycle and footbridge for the RAVeL-network

Following a competition, the commune of Seneffe entrusted bureau Greisch with the task of design a new footbridge.

The Arquennes viaduct, railway bridge of the old line 141, was inaugurated in 1854. Demolished during the World War II, it was replaced by a temporary Bailey bridge in the 1990s, then dismantled again. Its disappearance today marks a cut on the RAVeL of line 141, forcing pedestrians, cyclists and riders to mingle with car traffic to cross the village.

Reinterpreting the past to better fit in with the present

In order to respect the original structure and integrate into this remarkable site, a contemporary truss structure was chosen, the meshes of which recall the characteristics of the old railway bridge. The materials chosen (Corten steel structure and exotic wood deck) offer excellent durability, thus limiting maintenance costs and needs.

The width of 4 meters allows an easy passage and crossing of the different users of the footbridge.
