Work has begun at Franchimont castle

The restoration and stabilization works on the keep of Franchimont Castle, located in Theux, began this October with the installation of a 48-meter tower crane in the moat. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday, 21 November, in the presence of Valérie Lescrenier, Walloon Minister of Heritage.

This ambitious project focuses first on restoring the masonry and stabilizing the keep and the shield wall (listed as exceptional heritage of Wallonia), which date from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. Exposure to harsh weather conditions and earlier restoration works using cement mortar have severely damaged the masonry. The most deteriorated stones will therefore be replaced, and the wall tops will be covered with vegetation to limit water infiltration. In addition, injectable anchors will be implemented to stabilize the large tower, which shows a significant lean.

In a second phase, visitor safety and accessibility will be improved, allowing for greater understanding and better readability of the castle’s history. The works will be carried out with respect for the ancient remains: suggesting rather than reconstructing. Reversible techniques will therefore be preferred, and new interventions will be clearly identifiable.

The works are scheduled to be completed before the 2027 medieval fair.
