Project « Verviers – Ville conviviale »
The project, led by the joint venture Baumans-Deffet – greisch, involves renovating the public spaces «from facade to facade» between the central station and Verviers town hall.
The works, partially subsidised by ERDF 2014-2020 funds and the Walloon Region (Impulse credits), cover an area of 39,000 m² and are being carried out under a joint contract with the various road concessionaires, allowing for the relocation and renovation of the various contractors.
The new developments consider the constraints imposed by the many other projects planned for the city centre, including the construction of a shopping centre (Citymall), the renovation of the Grand Théâtre, the development of the administrative centre, etc.
The aim is to create a friendly environment in the town centre. To achieve this, the areas dedicated to pedestrians and soft modes are being extended and improved in terms of quality, through the choice of natural materials. Monuments such as fountains and the ‘Chic Chac’ staircases are being restored, and the tree-lined parks are being enlarged and renovated.
This spirit of design is also reflected in the replacement of the structures used as canopies with new, more contemporary, and functional designs. Bus stops without advertising will be placed all along the urban axis. A lighting plan for night-time lighting is also being studied by Ores in collaboration with Baumans-Deffet – greisch.
The works will be phased over 4 years to minimise the impact on the town centre’s economic, educational and festive activities.
Bureau Greisch is responsible for stability studies and technical specifications in line with the development plans and design by the Baumans-Deffet urban planning and architecture office.
