Seine-Scheldt link – Upgrade of the Scheldt in Tournai_Widening of the Delwart bridge
Within the framework of the modernization of the crossing of the Scheldt at Tournai, the Delwart bridge will be upgraded to improve the accessibility of soft modes of transport.
The Delwart bridge development is characterized by a widening of the upstream sidewalk.
The lane initially dedicated to the bus is requalified as a sidewalk and/or bicycle lane in deactivated concrete.
This enlargement also makes it possible to create an «esplanade» to the «Parc du Jardin de la Reine» and a more comprehensible link to the Casterman Quay.
A balcony walkway is attached to the bridge to offer a privileged view of the docks and the cathedral. This wooden footbridge, resting on a metal structure, is laid out in parallel with a two-way bicycle path. The footbridge is extended by a staircase giving direct access to the «Quai des Vicinaux». The ensemble is protected from road traffic by an alignment of grass plants boxes.
The metal box is simply supported along its length on the edge beam of the existing structure, while a recess is made at the piers and abutment. The steel box-girder is simply supported along its length on the edge beam of the existing structure, and embedded at the piers and abutments. The aim of this arrangement is to avoid overloading the existing structure’s edge beam, which does not have sufficient reserves.
The Bureau Greisch carries out a complete mission of architecture and stability for this bridge.
