Kanal – Centre Pompidou
This is undoubtedly one of the most important projects in the cultural transformation of Brussels: the transformation of the emblematic building of the former Citroën garage in Yser into a cultural centre. Until now, it has been used temporarily to host all sorts of exhibitions, artistic performances, cultural workshops, etc. However, the ambition is much broader: to make it the capital’s essential art centre, which will include a museum of modern and contemporary art, as well as the CIVA architecture centre.
To achieve this, a major renovation and redevelopment project is required.
First, in building engineering services and energy, it is a matter of juggling the different structures. One of the challenges is to study each space individually according to its future use, to ensure the coherence of the overall operation. The objective is to guarantee the best results in terms of processes, visitor comfort, conservation conditions and safety of the works, lighting, security, waterproofing, etc., while paying particular attention to the energy efficiency of the building and the interactions with the stability.
In terms of the structure, the project concerns the creation of new volumes in the structure on the one hand, and the renovation of existing structures on the other, while respecting the quality and the architectural and heritage sensibility of the site.
Bureau greisch accompanied the BuroHappold team until the submission of the permit and is taking over the whole of the studies until the end of the project.
