Renovation of eight steel bridges in the Netherlands Along the main roads of the dutch highway network, some bridges have fatigue problems, mostly on their decks. Rijkswaterstaat has developped a structural solution for the bridges with an orthotropic steel deck consisting, after repair, of the reinforcement of the deck with a very high resistant concrete slab 60 mm thick to create a composite behaviour.
The mission of the engineering consortium concerns the eight following bridges : Muiderbrug, Scharbergbrug, a bowstring bridge near Beek, Kreekrakbrug, Galecopperbrug, Waalbrug at Ewijk, the second Brienenoordbrug and Suurhoffbrug.
The mission covers the engineering and the complete project management, including bridge inspection, calculation, design, preparing contract documents and supervision of the execution of the works.
Each bridge is recalculated in accordance with the latest load and calculation standards. The definitive load combinations are determined in deliberation with the ministry, in function of the traffic forecasts and the additionnal costs for the upleveling.
The whole main structure is checked to resistance as to fatigue, and the required reinforcement mea-sures are determined.
